Types of Poetry




• SONNET : It is a poem of 14 lines,  it is divided into two which are octave and sestet.
ELEGY : It's mournful song for death.
ODE : It means a song,  it is a long poem address to some one or thing especially nature and used to praise the poetic object,  it may also be for celebration of a special occasion.
• BALLARD : It is a poem which tells a tragic story
TRADITIONAL POEM : It is a name for any of the large body of traditional oral poems in Africa. They are often chanted or edited in honor of some heroic person,  anvils or event.
PROSE POEM : A poem written in a prose like structure.
LULLABY : It a song played in other for children to sleep or it a song which we use to make a child sleep.
PANEGYRIC POEM : A poem which praised heroine of a heroic Deed.
DIRGE OR CORONACH POEM : A song in poetic form for the lamentation of the dead.
CENTO : A composition or compilation for different poems of different poet.
LIMERICK : A short humorous poem with three long and two short lines.

The sun rising by John Donne



The sun rising is a metaphysical poem,  the poet ( John Donne) uses the image of the sun to sing the praise of his mistress whom he loves.

In the fist stanza of the poem, the poet is unhappy at the the unruly behavior of the sun. He complains and calls the sun an old fool because it shines through the window into his room disrupting his love making with his mistress.

In the second stanza, the poet enumerate the sterling qualities of the sun. It radiates, worthy of great respect, strong and powerful. The poet ask the sun it is so inconsiderate. He boasts that he can completely shut out the sun,  just by a glittering eyes can over power that of the sun rays,  just as the sun rays can equally over power his lovers glittering eyes.

POETIC DEVICES USED IN THE POEM
the poetic devices used are metaphor, allusion, apostrophe, rhetorical question, imagery, hyperbole and simile.

APOSTROPHE
The "Sun" is addressed several times in the poem

METAPHOR
"The range of time" it represents nature of time

HYPERBOLE
If her eyes not blinded Thine

IMAGERY
There is sensuous images of the sun in the peom

RHETORICAL QUESTIONS
 Why shouldst thou think?
 Must to they motions lover's seasons run?

STRUCTURES OF THE POEM
The poem has thirty (30) lines
 it has 3 stanza
Each stanza contains 10 lines with a rhyme scheme of ABBA, CDC'S, EE

THEME IN THE POEM
The major themes in the poem are
The positive and the negative of the sun
Also in the poem The power of love and the last is the beauty of nature.
